Mile-Ex, a neighborhood in Montreal, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, emerging as the city’s prominent tech hub. Originally known as Marconi-Alexandra or part of Little Italy, the area was once dominated by manufacturing factories, particularly textile and clothing industries. However, in the early 2000s, the neighborhood earned its name by combining Mile End and Park-Ex, two nearby districts. The decline of the garment industry opened doors for major players in the technology and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors to flock to the area, revitalizing the old factories and bringing about an influx of creative tech workers.

The influx of tech giants into Mile-Ex has positioned Montreal as a leading global hub for AI research. Renowned companies like IBM, Facebook, Google, and Samsung have established research facilities in the area, attracting other businesses and academic research groups. The Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms (MILA) has further solidified Mile-Ex’s status as an AI hub by launching a large facility that will accommodate 700 workers, focusing on fundamental research. Microsoft Research Montreal has also joined the fray, relocating its office to the burgeoning AI hub. As a result of this tech boom, the area has regained the 3,500 jobs it lost after the decline of the clothing industry, with expectations to reach 5,000 jobs in the near future.
